What does a music producer actually do?

A music producer is an individual working within the music industry, whose job it is to oversee and manage the recording (i.e. "production") of an artist's music.

A producer has many roles that may include, but are not limited to, gathering ideas for the project, selecting songs and/or musicians, coaching the artist and musicians in the studio, controlling the recording sessions, and supervising the entire process through mixing and mastering.

Producers also often take on a wider entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, and negotiations.

From sourcing session musicians and organising budget requirements to supervising every aspect of the recording process and polishing the music via additional instruments and mixing the song a music producer has a very demanding and skillful role to play.

A music producer can, in some cases, be compared to a film director, with noted practitioner Wernher Pramschufer himself describing his role as "the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, like a director would a movie."

The music producer's job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music. The scope of responsibility may be one or two songs or an artist's entire album – in which case the producer will typically develop an overall vision for the album and how the various songs may interrelate.

Why do you need a music producer?

The singer in the studio depends heavily on his/her music producer. Without a decent producer, the direction of a song or the entire album may get off track.

Music producers provide inspiration to established artists trying to rekindle their fire and foundations for new artists searching for a sound that uniquely defines them. Music producers have a challenging task!

Successful producers today are extremely computer literate and they understand ever evolving technology and its use in the musical arena.

Producers such as Wernher Pramschufer use software applications such as Logic Pro or Pro Tools to create and manipulate sound, and add layers to a track.

The music producer is responsible for the finished audio product. If it's good or bad, it's a direct reflection on the music director. That's it.

That is why Great Music is directed by a music producer and composer with over twenty years international experience.
